Bass Opener..... What A Blast!!!

Well if you didnt already know bass opens the last saturday in june in zone 11 which was this past weekend. the fishing was great i fished the lavase river about a killometer down from where it flows out of dupont lake. I started fishing at about 8am and was using my pflueger endeavor baitcasting rod and tossing a jointed rapala that was chartreuse in colour, now let me say this i did not retie or switch lures the whole time i might as well have left my tackle box at home, mind you I did bring my microlite set up with just a #4 eagle claw hook and a dozen worms which also produced. I started out using a fast retrieve and was getting strike after strike must have caught 10 -15 smallmouth in the first hour. I then decided to use a verry slow retrieve as to not make the rapala dive but to just make it walk accross the water and boy was that fun the bass were exploding on the surface for that presentation, so I would let them suck it under for a second or two and bam clean hookset every time. I ended my fishing trip early that day because i had caught about 30 fish which i see as alot for the small portion of river i fished and did not want to catch the whole population haha. I kept 4 nice smallies ranging from 2lbs to 4lbs and had some for breakfast today, have you ever had bacon and eggs with fish? mmmm mmm mmm good I tell ya it was awsome. below are a few of the photos i took that morning enjoy, and keep your line wet!!!

First hybrid I have even seen out of the lavase river!!!

Nice 3 1/2lb smallie I caught with another spinner in its mouth....bonus!!

lavase river northerns and smallmouth

Dont you love it when your first fishing trip of the year is just a blast, I know i do. I think it helps to motivate people to do alot more fishing during the season when they catch fish the first time out. My first time out this season was a great succes, I fished the lavase river in north bay ontario from shore and caught an abundance of fish mainly smallmouth and northern pike. a friend and i decided to go throw some spinnerbaits for pike and we got more than we bargained for here are some photos from our first trip of 2009, enjoy!!!

terry with what i think is the smallest northern pike i've seen caught!!

A smallmouth i pulled from the mouth of the river just where it dumps into lake nipising

terry with another smallmouth

a few more smallies from the morning
all in all we didnt catch as many pike as we would have liked but the smallmouth made up for it!!
